Graduation... birthdays... celebrations… releasing our new Spring|Summer collection! To say that we are excited and PROUD of this collection is an understatement!
Behind this release are incredible artisans scattered around the globe. From Latin America, we have products from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Haiti. From Africa, we carry products from Uganda, Cameroon, Zambia, Kenya, and South Africa. From Asia, including the Middle East, we have products from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Laos, Pakistan, and Syria. From Europe, we have artisans from Bosnia. And that’s just a sample. The style, design, and sourced materials are inspired from diverse cultures, unique surroundings and motivated women. Our focus is on groups of women that are un- or underserved from the fair trade market, many times from places also underrepresented.
But what about the women who bring it to you? As a way to celebrate the hardworking, dedicated women behind the brand, we want to share a bit of us with you. We have graphic designers, outreach associates, product designers and the management team who bring it all together along with a slew of volunteers including our Design Committee. All are driven by a motivation and passion to help female artisans and their families to further benefit economically and socially to help break a cycle of poverty.
As a way to introduce, honor, and celebrate our team, we want to highlight who they are as well as their favorite product from our new collection! Spread across 3-5 time zones and countries over the past year, we have become great at flexibility, adaptability and support to one another. United by a passion to bring you fair trade, handmade, quality products- we are all so proud of our new collection and excited to share some of our faves with you!
Meet Andra, our Associate Director- who worked on the ground with Casa Rosa, our first cooperative training graduates and overseer of design . This summer you can find her racing her first road bike around the colorful landscapes, basking in the Colorado sunshine. Her favorite product from this collection? The Boho Bag from Bosnia. The design of this bag came from months of collaboration directly from our designers with the artisans! The bag is truly beautiful.
Next up on our team, we are excited to introducing our Outreach Associate, Alex. Alex’s favorite animals are whales, especially female humpback whales because they form lasting friendships with other female humpback whales and migrate to find each other year after year. (Awww!) Her favorite product from our new collection is the yoga mat carrier (especially the green one!) If you see Alex at an event, make sure to say hi!
Kandace is a bonafide design nerd from the Chicagoland suburbs. It all started out with a love of fabric that lead her to study fashion at the Illinois Institute of Art. Kandace comes to WPMarket after working as a Home Decor Product Designer and Digital Creative Editor for an Indie-Magazine wanting to use her development knowledge and editorial skills to help empower women all around the world! In her free time she enjoys exploring local coffee shops while designing digital textile designs for her #365piecesofKandy Project. Her favorite product from our new collection is a tie between the Copper Fringe Earring (afterall, she is a bold earring girl!) or the Nomad Tote because it fits her laptop and essentials for her coffee shop adventures!
Our Program Manager/Product Designer is Stephanie. After spending four months in both Guatemala working with our Mujeres con Vision and Cameroon with Classic Designers Association, she absolutely loves the passion, creativity talent that comes when the women are able to work together! Her favorite products are the two these groups put together: a fashionable, bright, summery wrap and a cross body that has three pockets, perfect for carrying all of the necessities! Stephanie is at home in and around water; one of her favorite memories was the surreal moment she swam with whale sharks in the Philippines.
And lastly, our Managing Director, Rachel. Rachel co-founded WPMarket with her friend Dana a few years ago in order to help empower grassroots, female artisans with skills training, market access, and increased income. For her day job, she works in international development with a focus on economic development to increase opportunities for women and girls. After spending two years living in Nepal, she just returned to Denver and can be found exploring the city and the Colorado mountains with her husband and two dogs. Her favorite item is the Dhriti Dhaka Wristlet Clutch from Nepal because it combines centuries-old, traditional Dhaka weaving with a modern twist!
Putting together this collection has been an incredible collaboration and we are all so excited to share it with you!
