THE STORY:

The Foundation for the Realization of Economic Empowerment (F.R.E.E.) Zambia was founded in 2010 to empower women in Zambia. The community where F.R.E.E. Zambia works is highly impoverished with unemployment over 85%. Fifty-one (51) percent of women in Zambia are illiterate, and it is likely higher in this community.

In response, F.R.E.E. Zambia's jewelry project was started to provide the women skills to earn a higher income. Over 30 women have been trained in the program.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR WOMEN:

Through the project, the women have transformed their lives. Those who are producing and selling well are supporting numerous family members, even though they are young and single. The income enables some of the women to go to school, helps them pay their sibling’s school fees, puts food on the table, and pays rent.

In the Founder's words, "They see life differently. They’ve grown in self esteem and confidence. They have had many opportunities and experiences that most in the community will never have. They see a bright future ahead for themselves. They’re ambitious. They’ve become capable."
